Sails. . . It's a Dirty Business

When the guy in the next berth asks if you had to have your grey green colored sails made special, you know it's time for a cleaning. Mildew, dirt and salt residue on sails are a common problem for sailboat enthusiasts. Some sailmakers, boat repair facilities and marinas offer sail cleaning, yet few actually do the work themselves. In fact, it's not unusual for sail cleaning to be subcontracted to local rug cleaners.

We've always offered sail cleaning right on our premises as a regular service to our customers. The demand became so great it began to interfere with the sailmaking part of our business. That's when we decided to bite the bullet and build a separate facility dedicated exclusively to sail cleaning. Located adjacent to our sailmaking loft, our new sail cleaning facility measures 800 square feet. Currently, we clean dry and fold over 60 sails a day. Offering timely pickup and delivery service to sail lofts from Connecticut to North Carolina. We guarantee cleaning in one week

Sail Cleaning By Hand

Typical rug cleaning machinery can ruin a good sail. Furthermore, harsh chemicals can weaken Sail fabric. Before we ever attempted to clean sails we checked with two separate sailcloth manufacturers and chemical labs, each specializing in cleaning solvents. Based on their recommendations and a written approval, we use cleaning solutions which are mild yet effective, making them sailsafe. But the best part for most boat owner is the convenience. For those docked on the Delaware River, we're only minutes away. For those who sail on the Chesapeake but live in this area, it's reassuring that at the end of each season you can pick up your sails and take them to a professional sail cleaning establishment nearby.
