Hendrickson Sailmakers

Hendrickson employs the same computer technology for sailmaking that larger lofts brag about. "Our software library of sail designs has thousands of makes and models of sailboats," Hendrickson tells us. "I use the computer to identify the basic sail design, then I make modifications to the design to reflect the needs of the individual owner and the characteristics of the individual boat."

While computer-aided design or CAD, is a valuable tool for the sailmaker, it is no substitute for racing experience. "There's no competent sailmaker who hasn't done his share of sailboat racing," Hendrickson said. "You can't appreciate and understand sails and design until you have observed a boat and its sails under the pressure of competition. A sail has to look right."

Hendrickson, who won his first sailing trophy at age 13, has racing in his blood. In 1977, he won both the prestigious Annapolis Yacht Club's Fall Series Race (Delta II Class) and the prestigious skipper's race. In 1984, Hendrickson served as watch captain for the "Air Express," which placed third in class among 52 yachts in the Annapolis, Md., to St. George's, Bermuda, race. "I have several hundred trophies, but I keep them at home and out of the loft because I don't want to intimidate people and discourage them from asking basic but important questions."
